A Daffodil Wreath

Because daffodils are among the first flowers to emerge every year - sometimes even rising through the snow to reveal their showy spring colors - I chose these bright flowers for a new door wreath. A January Wreath

When it's time to take the Christmas wreath off the front door I always feel a bit let down, and I can't help but imagine the poor door shivering naked in the cold winter air.

I know the stores immediately restocked all the Christmas shelves with new goodies in anticipation of that sweetheart of a February holiday, but it's still too early to hang a Valentine wreath on my door. It's also too early for springtime florals, even though I'd love to see something in bloom.

Thanks P. Allen Smith

To kick off the holiday season, P. Allen Smith and the Berry Family of Nurseries recently sponsored a fun giveaway for a beautiful Christmas wreath here at Aunt Nubby's Kitchen. A wreath from the P. Allen Smith Holiday Collection was generously donated to be given away to one of my blog readers, and Marlene was the lucky recipient of the wreath from the Classic Collection. After a few days, I received an email from Marlene saying that her wreath had arrived, and that she absolutely loved it! That made me very happy, but my happiness escalated when a beautiful Classic wreath arrived at my door too!

I decided to use my 20-inch fresh juniper and cedar wreath in my dining room as a table centerpiece. It was a perfect fit in this large metal bowl. The wreath is beautifully decorated with pine cones, red berries, and tied with traditional red plaid ribbon. The scent of the fresh greenery is just so wonderful! I had been spritzing an evergreen mist on the faux greenery in my house before the wreath arrived, and oh my, there is just no comparison!

Harvest Time Door Decor

As soon as Halloween was gone it was time to change out the door decor, so I did away with all my creepy spiders and moved on to something more appropriate for the fall season. There's not much time between Halloween and the Christmas season, but I wanted my door to have a seasonal look, so I put together some simple pieces in fall colors to welcome my guests.

This door swag was so easy to put together; I used only hot glue and florist wire to assemble the parts.

There are three main pieces to my door decor. I used one grapevine swag piece for stability and 2 fall floral stems for the foliage.

I also used some Indian corn and a roll of wired burlap ribbon for my bow. Some additional pieces that I used that I forgot to photograph in advance were a couple of squash and a small pumpkin. To make the swag I placed one of the floral stems at the top of the grapevine piece, and the other stem at the bottom. Next, I added the Indian corn, squash, and pumpkin, then I finished with a big burlap bow in the middle. This fall swag was super easy to make, and Hobby Lobby helped me out by having most of the supplies on sale too!

• The bad news is that my Harvest Time door decor won't be up too long until it's time to change it again.

Some Holiday Cheer . . . For You

After Halloween each year it seems to me that the holidays just collide. Thanksgiving rolls into town with its turkey and all the trimmings, and before the leftovers are gone we have the Christmas tree up. Then it's such a whirlwind to get all the other decorations up, the shopping done, the gifts wrapped, and the food prepared in time for the Christmas festivities. Holiday time can be stressful for the one in charge of making the season jolly for everyone else.

A Halloween Wreath

Not long ago I wrote about ways to eliminate spiders from the house, and one way was to keep them off the porches. Today I am contradicting myself because I have just invited lots of spiders to adorn my front porch for Halloween. I decided to make a creepy crawly spider wreath for the entertainment of all those little trick or treaters who will soon be ringing my doorbell.

The inspiration for my wreath came from a picture that I saw on Pinterest, but I have not been able to find the original source to give due credit. I used the idea that I saw in the picture with some added embellishments of my own.

To make the wreath I used a green Christmas wreath that I had discarded and stashed in a closet. I also used a can of black spray paint.

I spray painted the wreath with several coats of paint on both sides, covering all the greenery, letting it dry between coats. 

Some of the supplies I used were black tulle, orange wired ribbon, plastic spiders, florist wire, and wire cutters.

I also used some ping pong balls, wiggly eyes, and of course, my hot glue gun.

After the wreath was painted black and dried, I wrapped some black tulle around the wreath to give it a web-like effect. Then I simply hot glued the orange spiders all over the wreath for color and "creepiness".  Peeking eyes were made from the ping pong balls and wiggly eyes hot glued together. The wreath was finished with a big orange bow made from the wired ribbon and florist wire.

I think I'll let these spiders hang around on my porch while the big googly peeking eyes are on the look out for trick or treaters!

Making a Tied Fabric Wreath

There may be as many ways to make fabric wreaths as there are crafters who make them. Some are made with short pieces of fabric tied on wire forms, others are made with squares of fabric pinned to straw forms, still others are made with pieces of fabric that are hot glued to a form, and the list goes on.

The fabric wreath that I have made is a tied fabric wreath using longer pieces of fabric.

 

I started with a 12-inch straw form. Once you select your form, then you need to cut a strip of fabric and test it to see how long you want it to be. The strip will need to be long enough to wrap all the way around the wreath form and tie in a knot with loose ends, so the thicker your form, the longer the fabric strip will need to be.

I  used pinking shears to cut strips of fabric 18 inches long for my form. It is not important that the strips all be exactly the same width, the width can vary. I used about 1/2 yard of each fabric to make the wreath.

 

Wrap the strips around the form and secure by tying in a knot. Keep the strips close together so that the wreath form is completely covered.

Keep working around the wreath, tying the strips of fabric and keeping them pushed close together. After all the knots were tied, I embellished the wreath with a small sock money.

 

My wreath was made to hang in my laundry room to go with the new ironing board that was made from the same print. My laundry room had absolutely no decor before, but now the little sock monkey will be keeping a watchful eye over all the washing and ironing activities at my house. I think I'll enjoy having him around.
