The Nap

Even though the rabbit is not mine I'm still getting quite attached to him. I don't know where he came from, or who he might have once belonged to. I just know that if I don't see him around the neighborhood for a day or more I really begin to worry about him. I think about all the things that could happen to a bunny out in the big world. So today when he came by I was relieved and happy to see him.

He stopped by my porch for something to eat. He really seems to like the mandevilla vines.

I also gave him some carrots and lettuce. He gratefully ate most of that.

After lunch he retired to the corner of the porch. Then he started grooming.

Now that he was spotless and his tummy was full, he decided to sit down and stay a while.

He seemed to be getting pretty comfortable. My presence did not seem to make him nervous at all. In fact, he got so relaxed he dozed off for an afternoon nap.

I sat on my bench and watched him sleep - until his internal clock told him it was time to wake up.

Then he stood up, stretched, and yawned. My, what big teeth you have! What a sight! A rabbit nap is definitely an exciting thing to watch!

P.S. Note to Mike: I will NOT be including any recipes with my posts about the rabbit, sorry.

A Return Visit

I went out on my porch around noon today and soon realized that I wasn't alone. The adorable black and white bunny that had unexpectedly visited me about two weeks ago was back again. There he was, on the porch underneath my bench.

The last time he came I was quite surprised and unprepared for his visit. He just dropped in unannounced last time. But now he has been seen around the neighborhood quite a lot, and I was hoping that he would come back to my house to visit again. This time I was prepared.

I was stocked up on his favorite treats. He munched and nibbled.

And crunched and chewed.

He thanked me for lunch. We may be having lunch together again soon. I hope so.

An Unexpected Luncheon Guest

Have you ever had an unexpected guest drop by right at meal time when you have nothing prepared to serve? That happened to me today, but thankfully everything worked out just fine. My advice in this situation - don't be fussy. Make do with whatever you have on hand. After all, the visitor chose YOU above all others to spend some one-on-one time with, so make the most of it. Count your blessings, be glad you have friends who are comfortable enough to stop by without calling first. Serve up whatever you have with a smile because your guest came by to see you, and the food is only a secondary part of the visit. Here's how I handled the dilemma of having nothing prepared as luncheon fare today when my guest arrived.

This is the guy who showed up. I had not actually ever met him before, but he seemed like a familiar old friend, because I had often read about him to the school children I used to teach in this book.

The Velveteen Rabbit has always been one of my favorite books, but I never dreamed that one day I would actually have the opportunity to entertain the main character for lunch. So what to do?

I decided a picnic would be nice, and I first offered him a nice salad of mixed greens. It was quite to his liking.
He decided to have more than one helping. I was honored.
I then offered my most tender young day lily sprouts.
They were a definite hit with my little friend. Alas, I had no cakes or pies baked for dessert, but I should have not despaired, for he was immediately drawn to the fragrance of the purple mandevilla.
So, he topped off lunch with a light dessert of mandevilla blossoms.
I must say, today's guest was quite unexpected, but he was the most delightful visitor I've had in a while.
Good-bye old friend, come back again real soon.
