Mission Organization: Week 23 - Under the Kitchen Sink

The mission this week was a simple one to organize. I don't keep a lot of things under my kitchen sink, but the ones I had stored there were looking pretty cluttered and needed some attention.

I moved all the items out and sorted them. I had basically two types of things stored under the sink - cleaning supplies and plant food items. In order to keep the items together I grouped them into containers. This will make it easier to find what I'm searching for when I reach under the sink for an item.

I now have one basket for some basic cleaning things that I like to have handy and another basket for plant food and fertilizers that I use for my houseplants.

I didn't spend much time working on this mission, but I like the results. I think having the items sorted in containers will be an improvement under my sink.

Mission Organization: Week 20 - The Kitchen Drawers

I didn't really choose this week's mission - it more or less chose me. As I was driving home from the Nashville area last Sunday, my husband called to tell me that the cabinet maker we had talked to about redoing our kitchen cabinets would be at our house with his crew first thing Monday morning. What that meant for me was that as soon as I arrived home (after almost two weeks away) I would need to start unloading drawers, etc., in the kitchen.

In my hurry panic to get everything done on Sunday evening I forgot to make any before pictures of the drawers as they were, but take my word, they were in need of a reorganization. Since they all had to be emptied, this week was the perfect time to purge and get them into a better order.

For the drawers that had a lot of loose items I emptied them into plastic tubs so I could go through the contents.

Of my fifteen drawers that had to be emptied, I did have ONE drawer that was already organized - my spice drawer.

I had organized this drawer several months ago as a solution to the problem of never being able to find the spice jar I was looking for in my upper cabinet. This method is still working very well for me. To empty this drawer all I had to do was lift these trays out.

My towel drawer got a straightening.

This small drawer is for my dishcloths and rubber gloves.

I had several seasonal napkin packages that needed organizing.

The everyday flatware drawer got sorted out.

This big drawer holds all my foil, plastic wrap, parchment paper, and wrappings of all kinds.

This drawer full of my "playthings" was probably the most cluttered. I attempted to sort and get an order to this one.

These two kitchen desk drawers had a lot of stuff to discard. They came up almost empty afterward.

This drawer holds hot pads and trivets.

This drawer might be called the "junk drawer" but it is just an assortment of unrelated items.

Every drawer got a makeover and so did my kitchen cabinets! It was a big week for my kitchen!

Mission Organization: Week 13 - My Coffee Cupboard Runneth Over

The cabinet above my coffee maker is a little over stuffed. I keep a supply of coffee, coffee filters, and mugs there. I also keep tea and hot chocolate mixes along with straws. It all sort of made sense at one time, but it has gotten really cluttered. My mission this week was to reorganize this cabinet.

I just emptied the cabinet to begin with and wiped it all out. After sorting through the mugs and choosing my husband's favorite ones, this is the group I had left to discard. Is it any wonder there wasn't room for anything? Who needs this many mugs for morning coffee?

When I was decluttering, I had to rescue this mug. It's one that a favorite student gave me many, many years ago. I kept this mug at school for years and had coffee in it every day. There are too many happy memories to let this one go.

Here's an item that is long overdue to be discarded. I haven't had a coffee maker that uses this basket type of filters in many months. These are being moved to the craft supplies!

After the purging and decluttering I found that I had an entire empty shelf, so I moved the to-go coffee cups from another cabinet over to this one. Now that makes sense, I think. I also added some small baskets to keep similar items together.

One basket is for coffee filters.

Another basket is for teas.

Hot chocolate mixes fill a third basket.

All those extra mugs can be donated and there are still plenty left.

The extra coffee is in the cabinet, but I filled one of my Fiestaware canisters with coffee and set it beside the coffee maker for everyday use.

I'm very happy with my coffee cabinet reorganization. It's so nice not to have everything crowded and stacked here, I just need to apply this to the rest of the kitchen!

Mission Organization: Week 10 - Kitchen Storage

My mission this week was to get my kitchen storage better organized. I have a couple of those pull out shelves on one side of my range, and I have not been using them to their best advantage. I've had them stuffed full of odds and ends that I seldom use, which is a shame because they are so handy. I started by removing everything out of the shelves and giving them a good wiping down.

There were some roasters and various pans in both shelves that are are infrequently used.

I probably use nothing in either of these shelves more than 2 to 4 times a year. What a waste of premium space!

I decided to put my casserole dishes in one of the shelves. I use them several times a week. I put their metal stands in the shelf beside them so I can find them when I need them too.

In the top pull out, I put my glass bowls that I use daily for prep and leftovers. These are in constant use for one thing or another. I added a small basket to contain their lids. I'm trying to move away from using plastic bowls because of the BPA issue, so I have several of these glass sets.  I haven't yet weeded out my clutter of plastic though, so that's a mission for another week.

The two finished pull out shelves now have items that I am likely to need on a daily basis. I'll push those roasters to the back corner of a dark cabinet until they are needed and enjoy having the items I use close at hand!

Mission Organization: Week 8 - My Bakeware

My Mission Organization project for this week was to organize my bakeware so that I could access it more easily. After all, I reach for these items every day, and having them handy just makes sense. My sister and my daughter both have those wonderful cabinets with built-ins that store baking sheets upright. I just love those, but my cabinets, unfortunately, did not have that feature until I gave them a makeover this week.

Here are a couple of my bakeware shelves after the makeover.

This is the way I was storing my bakeware in a lower cabinet. This is not a terrible arrangement, but not accessible either. I was spending my time standing on my head or down on my knees searching for the pan I needed.

I have a couple of these tall narrow pantries on either side of my refrigerator. I decided to try moving my bakeware into one of these.

I didn't even have anything too important in this one to move out.

I kept thinking of how to make my sheet pans and such stand up, so I bought two of these corner shelves.

I turned them sideways and pushed them to the back of the cabinet shelf.

Then I just slid all the sheet pans, muffin pans, and other bakeware into the slots, and it worked!

I am really happy with this new bakeware arrangement! I can see my pans now, and I don't have to stand on my head or crawl around the floor to find the one I want!

Happiness is . . . A Spice Drawer

Finding the spice bottle that I needed was once a frustrating experience for me in my kitchen. I would open the cabinet and start picking up bottles and jars, reading labels, and often it seemed I was picking up the same jars over and over again. For a while, I tried writing the names of the spice on top of the jars. This helped some, but did not solve the problem of too many spices stuffed together in the cabinet. I still couldn't find what I was looking for quickly. Recently I had the idea to use a large drawer for all my spices.

What a difference the drawer has made! I can now see every label clearly. I used the same type of little baskets to lay the jars in the drawer that I had used to stand them up in the cabinet, but the labels are so much more visible now.

The cabinet above that once was crowded with all the jars of spices now has enough breathing room for the salt, baking soda, flavorings, and other baking essentials. A little organization makes any cooking project go better. This spice drawer has made me happy. I'd love to know how other cooks organize their kitchens.
