Baked Mozzarella Sticks

I like to choose baking over frying anytime that I can. Since I'm a cheese lover, I was happy to find this recipe for Baked Mozzarella Sticks at Penelope's Oasis. I made them to go with lunch today, and I loved them, nothing greasy about these cheese sticks, just cheese and crunch.

Baked Mozzarella Sticks
1 (12 ounce) package mozzarella cheese strings
1/2 cup flour
2 large egg whites, lightly beaten
1 cup Italian style bread crumbs
Marinara sauce for dipping

Unwrap cheese strings and cut cheese pieces in half. Place cheese in freezer for 20 - 30 minutes. Prepare a baking sheet by lining with aluminum foil and spray lightly with cooking spray. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Place flour, egg whites, and bread crumbs in 3 separate bowls. Dip each cheese stick into the flour, then the egg white, then the bread crumbs, completely covering the cheese stick. Pat the bread crumbs on if needed to help them adhere. Place each cheese stick on prepared baking sheet. Bake for 10 - 15 minutes until golden brown. Serve warm with marinara or other dip of choice.

You'll need a package of mozzarella cheese strings and some Italian style bread crumbs. You can use plain bread crumbs if you like, but those will need to be seasoned with salt and pepper.

Cut the cheese strings in half and place in the freezer for 20 - 30 minutes. The original recipe indicated to freeze for 15 minutes to keep the cheese from oozing out while baking. Some of mine oozed quite a bit, so I'm recommending freezing them a little longer.

Place the flour, egg whites, and bread crumbs in 3 separate bowls.

Roll the cheese sticks in each one, and place on the baking sheet. Bake for 10 - 15 minutes.

Serve with Marinara or any other dipping sauce you like.
